I always think it’s a little vain when people self promote themselves for winning awards. But since this is something which I am genuinely unaccustomed at I’m going to do it anyway.
Accountancy Age has an annual award ceremony. I didn’t go this week, I admit, although I have been in the past. But I was [...]
I have for some time wondered whether it is worth accepting comments on this site. The number of commentators is small in proportion to traffic, their themes remarkably (and boringly) repetitive in most cases. Only a very few add anything to debate. They do, however, absorb my energy, which I have long thought better used [...]

Running a well read blog is a privilege.
Sometimes it is also hard work.
And occasionally it’s difficult.
This week I am travelling with relatively limited internet access, I suspect. So I will apologise in advance if comments take some time to be moderated. That is unavoidable.
As is the need for moderation itself. Despite excellent spam filters some [...]

I’ve got to say one of the best things I’ve decided to do in the last couple of years was to start this blog.
I enjoy doing it; you may have noticed.
I’m pleased so many people read it. Anyone who writes enjoys knowing they’re read and writing has been an essential part of my life since [...]

Someone, and I’m not sure who, recorded the 200,000 hit on this blog this morning.

Bloggers spend a lot of time wondering how much they can safely quote from news sites by people like the Times before we infringe copyright rules.
I was therefore amused to find the Times quoting big chunks of my blog verbatim last week. That makes me feel much better about borrowing stuff from them.

I guess it’s fair to note that this blog celebrates a year of publication today. Since most fail after a few months I’m quite pleased about that.
So, some facts to mark the event:
- 666 stories have been published- I estimate that’s not less than 130,000 words (well over a good book’s worth)- There have been [...]

I’ve come across a new blog. It’s not one with which I am in total sympathy but since I could argue with myself, if need be, there’s no surprise there. What is good is that:
1. It’s a UK tax blog
2. It’s well written
3. It’s willing to offer contentious opinion.
4. It’s based on knowledge, not bigotry [...]
AccountingWEB has run a piece on what is called Web 2.0 for accountants. This is not a techy site so I’m not going into the details (although i personally like them). But I do know a lot of accountants read this blog.
In my comment on AccountingWEB I said (in edited form here):
Web 2.0 is about [...]
I’m not sure why yet, but this weekend readers in China became the second biggest group of readers of this blog for the first time. It’s usually the US that takes that slot. The UK has always, to date, taken first slot.
You’re very welcome!
And for those who’re curious, on an average day there are readers [...]
