But why do we need the question, since tax does not lead to spending?
People don’t know that
I am in Leicester, so at the end of my book group last night, I thought I’d give a little plug to your talk. When I told people the title, someone (very predictably) said, “That’s easy, people just have to pay more tax”. So I explained as best I could my understanding of how a national economy works, but was met with blank incomprehension from this well-meaning and far-from-hostile group. It was just too far from their common-sense narrative. So I was quite disheartened, but felt that the door was just slightly ajar for another try at another time. Then I read the Guardian’s three pieces about the IFS report (Larry Elliot, Polly Toynbee and the Editorial) this morning and knowing that most of the group will have read them too, it has made me glum for the day.
We’ll get there
One day
