I was amused by this headline in the Guardian this morning:
Do they really think there were people who needed a new book to create such doubts?
Really?

Yeah. They used a typical phrase in that sentence hadn’t thought really thought it through. Quite amusing.
My view is that the only difference between Trump and people like Nixon is that Trump does not hide the odious creature that he is.
Nixon hid his nasty side from public view. We all know about Watergate but I’ve been watching the recent documentary on the Vietnam War that BBC4 recently aired and in one of the episodes it mentions how in order to manipulate US voters in a forth coming election, Nixon went behind the President Johnson’s back and got the South Vietnamese to change something they’d apparently already agreed with the incumbent President. This made it easier for Nixon to portray himself more positively to the US public and get voted in.
The documentary plays back a taped discussion between Johnson and Dirty Dick where the latter denies having done this when in fact the FBI/CIA(?) had caught him red handed at it and informed Johnson. Nixon lies to Johnson on the tape! And was still able to stand for President!! In any other normal functioning democracy Nixon would have been disbarred from standing because of this act.
But look at who else they’ve voted in:
Reagan – a neo-liberal brainwashed B-movie actor owned and created by corporate America who has enabled the US corporations to hollow out America and destroy its middle class which is what had actually made America great. And what about South America?
Bush Senior – who seemed to want to sell large portions of America to the Saudis and succeeded.
Clinton – a Democrat – who instead of investing in the county and its welfare system like he promised kowtowed to the financial industry instead. An inveterate liar buy all accounts with a ‘zipper problem’. And how he has sullied the name of his more capable wife!!
Bush Jnr – need I say more? Like Reagan – just a front for US corporate greed but this time they did not even bother to make him look intelligent or statesman like. The more intelligent Bush Junior is called ‘Jeb’!
American democracy and politics has failed in my view. It’s a real shame. American democracy is now almost a parody of the European systems the Founding Fathers supposedly wanted to leave behind.
What a tragedy.
Essentially the role of US president is some sort of sick joke. Trump’s predecessors caused less visible chaos because they were on message from day 1 by virtue of being political insiders.
Two things Trump said he wanted to do had to be stopped in short order. He declared he would go and have a chat with Vladimir Putin and crack a couple of beers or a bottle of Stolly. ‘Russiagate’ which is almost total bollox is the result of the ‘Deep State’ response to that and it kicked in immediately. Russia had to be maintained as the enemy without. That’s US policy. It underpins the military spending and the need for continued military presence in Europe.
Trump pointed to the overdue need for vast infrastructure spending in the US. An entirely sensible priority for the economy, but not for the ruling elite.
Tax reform was needed and delivered, but not the sort of reforms that make the situation better just more of the same elite siphoning of wealth.
A US president has not the power to resist the Deep State machinery. He might aswell resign now, but no one else would achieve much different. The sainted Hillary would have been a smoother ride but the results would not have been radically different.
The US will change direction when enough of the population wise up to the manner in which they are being shafted. There is a way to go.
Trumps instinct to fix America is not US policy. US policy is to screw the world.
