A post general election opinion poll:
I think that's a case of voter remorse.
And it is why the Tories will cling to power.

The Tories will always put Party before Country – it’s in their DNA. And May’s personality is on the extreme end of ‘obdurate’. However, the opinion polls are now so discredited it’s difficult to know what to believe. I think Corbyn should try to keep her struggling for as long as possible and force the Tories into even further despondency and diminished reputation. He’s got the whip (no pun intended) hand right now and should be in no hurry to form a government. I hope he can contain his ego. From a national perspective the Labour Party still has a lot of homework to do before it is ready to assume office efficiently and effectively. But I may be wrong. I usually am.
Largely agree with this.
As it stands the Tories look all over the place (they are, of course) and Labour look ready to drive home their advantage. They can and hopefully will, but they now have to act like a Govt in waiting. The party must unite under Corbyn, who must try to bring together all elements in the party and to build on his impressive election campaign.
Labour are back in the game in a way that seemed unthinkable just a month ago. However, complacency wont do and to expect the Tories to run another awful campaign like we’ve just witnessed is a bit optimistic.
Work to do but goodness at least there is a real opportunity for the party to make a realistic pitch to be the next Govt.
At the risk of stating the obvious, I think it shows that there were a lot of people who *wanted* to vote for Corbyn but who felt that it would be a wasted vote because “he had no chance”. Now they see that he’s actually a powerful contender, and worth voting for.
People behave differently when afraid. Now that ‘fear’ has been removed people can vote with their hearts. Next GE fear will come back on the stage when some politicians will stir up hatred and fear.
But I think people will also vote Labour without fear
One of the staples of Grand Opera is when the heroine or hero cries out “rimorso!” and you know that it has all gone seriously wrong and someone is in for a bad end. Only the General Election isn’t so grand and unlike opera is not worth the money. This was alleged to be a strong and stable government, but then fox hunting !!! and then messing up on social care and how to pay for it !!! and other things. The markets are not going to like this so we are all in for it. Rimorso indeed.
I can understand voter remorse. During canvassing I came across the view “I am not voting for JC because he is unelectable”. JC has destroyed that myth. That he is very much electable is now in the public domain. No amount of MSM spin can erase that. His eminent electability will shine like a beacon over the next GE
And that is going to change a great deal
In response to John D, it’s worth noting that this poll was by Survation who called the election pretty much spot on.
With YouGov, sometimes
Survation were one of the better opinion polls during the campaign.
They had the Tory lead going from 18%, 12%, 9%, 6% and finally 1%, slightly biased towards Labour if anything.
I do hope so.
But we do have to remember that May has been very bad indeed.
It will be interesting to consider what a more better managed Tory campaign might do to the Labour vote.
This is why the public re-education about how Government money can improve people’s lives when it is needed is so important.
I agree that public re-education is important. The public has shown glimmers of correct thinking in this election but do not forget that still more than 13m voted the wrong way. Their education was clearly faulty. It would be best for the state that people’s state of education should be tested before they can vote. Ignorant voting cannot advance a free and just state.
May’s ineptness (even using a Corbyn meme in her arrogant la la land speech) is now too well known and established, this is a Government without credibility and don’t think the public will accept a bunch of William of Orange merchants dictating things to the populace over here-a mixture of climate change deniers/ a man who has said he finds homosexuality ‘repulsive’ and the rest with the most parochial notion of identity one can conceive of.
May has, essentially, insulted the whole populace and is exhibiting delusional behaviour similar to Thatcher in her later years.
There were many Labour seats that were very close shaves and with a few more weeks might have fallen. If May had any humility at all she would have acknowledged the Corbyn phenomenon and sought consultation with Labour Ministers/Senior M.P.s
There will probably be another election soon-Labour need to keep on the move, no time to celebrate.
