Ranjan Balakumaran of Real Media visited me in my office recently and asked about what was wrong in the economy. This video includes some of the comments I made.

You come across as very sane and rational on camera Richard. Whatever lack of progress there may be in your work has nothing to do with your personal presentation that is for sure.
You are also looking every inch the distinguished Professor these days!
Flattery will get you a long way
Excellent exposition. Richard. A Joy to listen to.
Thanks
At the risk of being accused of sycophancy …. a star is born! Seriously Richard – this is an excellent video. And it leads me to suggest strongly that, with whatever assistance you can garner, a new YouTube channel is created with the express purpose of communicating the ideas + recommendations that have been articulated by you and others for the past decade.
While there are a plethora of other good informational & educational sites – such as Renegade Inc. – their format and content is not always as appealing as they could be to people who are not necessarily political & economic wonks (such as yours truly – lol). The educational ground is well covered by the likes of Steve Keen, Mark Blythe et al. but their appeal is limited to those who can understand what they’re talking about. And, then there are the independent news channels, such as The Real News, that disseminate progressive ideas vis their particular format.
So, what I’m suggesting is there’s a gap in the market for a series of short (max. 12 minute) videos explaining in understandable language (your particualr expertise) the core elements required for a progressive state to function ‘in the interests of the majority and not the few’ (hat tip to the LP). A good criterion would be to create a narrative that one could confidently email to a ‘Philistine’ acquaintance in order to get them ‘on board’ so to speak.
Maybe it could be done under the ‘Progressive Pulse’ banner, although I think it would be more appealing under your own name. Just a random thought for a wet Bank Holiday Monday.
I can make them
But they take filming and editing
I have no funds for that….
I think Richard Wolff in the U.S does ‘one minute’ videos to get fundamental ideas across ( he calls the EconoMinute) but he has the funding of his Democracy at Work organisation and the Left Forum.
I assumed there would be a funding requirement. But surely that’s not impossible via a number of different potential sources, e.g. – http://www.crowdfunder.co.uk, https://www.patreon.com, academic charities, private individuals (check your little black book!), independent media channels – maybe some people with spare cash who follow this blog. The first step would be to write a properly costed business plan, allowing for professional production, creation etc. Good ideas invariably find the requisite financing. I’m just thinking off the top of my head 😉
Let me muse on this
I suspect few would want one voice….
Usual apologies for lazy typos!
You could have guest contributors. Thinking a bit more about it, I’d favour a practical ‘problem + solution’ agenda – which underlies your recent Real News-Media interviews – each video dealing with one major topic. They could become the default antidote to prevailing popular pub (DM) myths!
Like many of your followers, I’m sure, I find myself in social situations where I end up trying to educate regular people about the fundamentals of what a sovereign state like the UK could and should be doing to ensure a better quality of life for present and future generations. I make a conscious effort to avoid party politics by keeping the dialogue as objective as possible. My success rate is depressingly low, especially among older business people. If I could direct them to such a site, they might begin to see the light.
Coincidentally, just the other day, in such a situation, I sent the person (at the opposite end of my political spectrum) a link to Randall Wray’s YouTube clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yofpo88ipmo. It’s not ideal because it’s American, academic and not intended for the use I made of it. Nevertheless I got a favourable reply saying they found it very interesting and would look into it further. So, who knows how many scattered seeds end up germinating?
Still thinking!
“Putting It Right – with Richard Murphy” would be a good title for the series. Anyone else got any suggestions?
Nicely done, Richard. Bravo.
Thank you….
No world tax governance.
You are wrong generally.
What we need is less trade agreements so that imports from a country can
be adjusted to compensate for other countries decisions.
You use the referee in a football match to make the case for world tax government. Not sensible.
The world is not a football game. It is a game of golf. All act in their own interest.
If someone is cheating then the other players challenge them as a temporary grouping.
You say: Tax delivers social justice!
You efectively require PFI nationalised.
This snacks of you wanting to re-join the EU after the reform
You think golf is without rules?
What a strange understanding you have
