At AGM of my successful local co-op (East of England Co-op), when re-appointment of auditors came up. I queried the use by an ethical company of unethical auditors. (PWC) Naturally very few people supported me. Afterwards the auditor came and talked to me and explained how positive in fact PWC are. I had also raised the same issue two years ago with Ecology Building Society who also use one of the big four. They said no other auditors had the right skills. This year I wrote again and said why not try Mazars. The reply I got was that building societies have to choose an auditor from a selection chosen by the Bank of England. Can this be so?
