The Conservatives really said that. In 1950. In their election manifesto.
How far they have gone in the wrong direction since then.
It is impossible to believe a Conservative would say that now.

That should be the aim of any Government.
Interesting that 1950-style Conservatives “should not hesitate to become members of Trade Unions…and play a full part in union affairs”.
Then along came Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Germany and China and the people of the UK said, “sorry, we don’t want expensive UK products, we want cheap products that are quite well made….we want cheap consumer goods, cheap cars….”
Simply, the rest of the world caught up and HMGs of all colours bought into the whole idea of how great global trade is…..mind you, labour relations and management attitudes to change in the UK from the 60s onwards didn’t help.
None of which for one moment prevents full employment
Mr. M.,
I’m a member of a TU – have been since I started work – I know people who hold views right across the political spectrum. Most of the people I know – yes I know it’s anecdote and not evidence – are in the TUs for protection in case of injury, workplace protection issues and situations related to employment law.
Hardly that radical – even ‘traditional Tories’ have their own TUs – the Law Society, the Royal Colleges and yes the grandest of them all the Police Fed.
If you listen to representatives of any of the above talking about the needs of their members and the ‘rights’ of their membes, they sound just like good shop stewards.
That was in the days when the Tories were interested in more than one ‘one’, Richard. One nation, not just the 1%. That went down the drain with Thatcher, and is unlikely ever to return.
Given that Unemployment was only about 1.5% at that time it was not too ambitious a statement and there was the Marshall Plan to help regenerate European economies. We need some sort of international or at least national cohesion now but not at the expense of a horrific war – a green agenda could do this but it would have to be the 11th hour and 59th minute before it would impinge on the collective conscience.
