His New Deal transformed the fortunes of the USA in the 1930s, though, unfortunately, he started to listen to the debt fundamentalists who told him he needed to cut the deficit. Foolishly, he listened and the US economy sank like a stone again.
World War II brought the US out of depression. Whether his career would have been as brilliant as his oratory or whether he would have just have becime another career politician, we will never know as he died before the wa ended.
Probably one of the best Presidents the US ever had.
Since we’re going back in time….
“The ordinance required several things including:
Everyone under 60 must work.
Employers must not hire excess workers
Employers may not pay and workers may not receive wages higher than pre-plague levels
Food must be priced reasonably with no excess profit”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ordinance_of_Labourers
That didn’t work either !
“Government by organised money is just as dangerous as government by organised mobs”
So apposite.
FDR also named four freedoms,
1.Freedom of speech and expression
2.Freedom of worship
3.Freedom from want
4.Freedom from fear
Very different to the supposd four freedoms that we have been conned into today, in the EU
– free movement of capital, services, goods and labour.
