Even some Tories are beginning to realise how mad the cuts they are proposing are:
Liam Fox, the defence secretary, has launched a big assault on the Treasury’s attempt to slash his department’s budget, warning that “draconian” cuts to military spending cannot be implemented without “grave consequences” for the Conservative party and the government.
Defence is not my favourite budget.
Fox is far from my favourite politician.
But he gets it: the cuts are massively harmful.
And his government will fail because of them.
But only after the rest of us have suffered enormously as a consequence.

Do you not think that when it comes down to it, it will be impossible to actually implement some of the cuts on the scale that has been proposed?
@Greg
Of course
That’s the absurd position the Tories have put themselves in
Their plan is obviously impossible
It’s why Labour must not repeat the error of going there
If I was Ed Miliband I think i’d just do a fair bit of mumbling and not come up with anything concrete. And then sit back and observe!
I do hope Dr Fox resigns to stir up some right-wing insurgency from the backbenches… could be the end of the ConDems sooner than we think.
He’s a right wing crazy in many ways but on defence cuts he is absolutely right… our current commitments are unsustainable given the level of funding. Of course the MoD does itself no favours by being inefficiently run and having a shocking procurement record…
