Am sharing an office with Andrew Holdenby of Reform who is jumping with delight at every benefit cut announced – laughing out loud with delight.
I cannot believe the callousness.

I think the sheer penny-pinching nastiness of the benefit and tax credit changes – uprating by CPI instead of RPI, when CPI is currently running between 1.5 and 2 percentage points lower than RPI – will backfire on the govt.
Making poor people poorer – that’s what the Tories (and now the Lib Dems) are about, and Osborne sure showed that today.
Taking sweeties from children is callous.
Taking alcohol from an alcoholic isn’t.
Truth is, benefits are inefficiently targetted.
It is callous to support taking benefits from those who need them.
It is reckless to oppose taking benefits from those who do not.
But the government spends 25% more than it takes in taxes.
At some point, benefit cuts will come.
You shouldn’t be surprised Richard. We know that the essence of capitalism is self-interest, and any talk of reforming it through regulation or imposing morality – a kinder, gentler capitalism – is both irrational and deceitful
