The Taxpayers Alliance are indeed barmy, and only in the UK and USA could anyone spout this rubbish and be taken seriously. But that does not let the tax system off the hook.
An unemployed single person receives about £200 a week in Jobseekers’ Allowance, housing benefit etc. Of that, about £20 a week is paid back to the government in tax, a nice example of churning. If the unemployed individual starts working, the gross labour cost to the employer must be not less than £315 a week if the net pay is to be more than the benefit. In other words there is an employment tax surcharge of 57% on marginal labour.
Which helps to explain why some people are trapped in idleness and welfare dependency.
The headline is amusing, but misses the point. Why do you think it should be government policy to fund this sort of research.
Alastair, Could it possibly be because the private sector won’t fund it because there are no short term quick returns on the investment and the technological outcomes are not foreseeable. We can be sure that without this kind of science technological progress will be greatly restricted.
alastair, governments have supported fundamental scientific research since the Renaissance. It is part of running a civilised society that this happens.
