Obama wins - Romney loses, as it should be for the offshore candidates

It’s going to come as no surprise to anyone that I am keen to see Barack Obama as US President. A man who out his name to the Stop Tax Haven Abuse Act is going to have my backing. So I was pleased to see him win Iowa comfortably.

It’s also going to be no surprise to anyone that I am no great fan of any of the Republican candidates, but it was good to see Mitt Romney get a drubbing. He’s a serial tax haven abuser as a private equity operator.

That makes for a hopeful result.

Gavin Hinks notes at Accountancy Age:

It’s interesting to note then that Obama is no favourite among employees in accountancy firms. We know that because of the way political donations have to be disclosed in US elections. Not a single accountancy firm figures among the top 20 employers for donors to the Obama campaign, according to the Washington-based Centre for Responsive Politics.

On the other hand employees of Ernst & Young form the 16th largest contributor to Hilary Clinton’s campaign while they form the biggest body of donors to the campaign of Republican candidate Rudolph Giuliani.

Interesting!

As ever, I’m out of step with my profession.

Historically, Democratic candidates have utilised money that has been through tax havens. Lets hope that Obama looks at where his presidentual campaign funding is coming from.

Obama’s stance has certainly been a principled one. Interesting then his funding and whether the accountancy firms are backing in the way they have other candidates.
