The dishonourable profession

Posted on

Accountancy Age notes that:

The Irish Revenue office has raised €3.5m from the underpayment of tax by accountants, after an audit of 82 accountants found 52 had underpaid their tax. The accountants had to pay €1.3m in interest and €0.4m in penalties.

No one knows who the accountants are.

But what a shocking indictment of the ethics of the profession this is. An error rate of this sort amongst a population that should know how to get its tax declarations right cannot be chance. It can only represent systematic abuse.

I am ashamed.
