I’ve never been convinced that land taxation is the ultimate solution to the taxation problem, although I am aware of the Georgist view.
But I do believe land taxation is important. I also happen to believe it should be progressive, unlike our existing council taxation.
Ashley Seagar discussed some of the issues in the Guardian a couple of weeks ago. It’s worth looking at.

France and Spain accept that a level of tax fraud is inevitable. It’s ingrained. They therefore concentrate on raising land taxes. It works. The figures are value based and come in 2 parts. One for the state and one for the local government. Local government has to balance its books and has to actively plan for amenities. They do that through a variety of tax raising measures – all land based. It works.
There are problems with accelerating house prices but much of that has been off the back of what is happening in the UK. Net effect, the countryside is being de-populated as young people move to the coast in search of work. But even there things are not great. Some parts of Spain are on a par with Mayfair prices. Who can afford that? You guessed it. Ex-pats who benefited from??
