Richard.
Thanks very much for your prompt response.
The reason for myself falling behind with my tax was due to the revenue moving the goalposts on who were employed or self employed in the construction industry and my new business venture.
After being hit with a bill my accountant made an agreement through me to pay my dues which i did. £10k upfront and £2k per month. My accountant was an ex Inland Revenue tax inspector. He says that my case is the worst he has ever encountered. steve

Steve

Thanks for the interest. Three comments I guess. One is get an accountant who knows how to deal with these things. I have done a fair number of tax investigations and I'd stress it's not a game for the faint-hearted. I would agree with you that not all Inspectors do alays play strictly by the rules, and they have to be reminded to do so.

Two, ask for a different Inspector. It can be done.

Third, you didn't help yourself my being late with your payments. I was never very sympathetic to thos who did not pay on time and I can see little reason why the Revenue should be either.

I have been following your web site for many months with great interest.
I do not know wether i fall into your category as a statistic of this governments morals or public standing.
In brief since 1998/99 i fell behind with my taxes after setting up a business venture.
As a consequence of this i came up against a tax inspector, whom we have a lets say a clash of personalities.
This person has harassed, intimidated, lied and cheated and above all has broken the official secrets act.
HMRC would not renew my cis6 contractors certificate due to late payments, but renewed them to other companies who were still behind with repayments.
Due to all of this, the Parliamentary Ombudsman feel that my case does not warrant a full investigation. What do you think.

[...] In the debate around tax ethics both at RIchard’s place and the AccountingWEB walled garden, what’s missing is an outline of a possible syllabus. Now’s as good a time as any to have a stab at this: [...]
